Gum Disease: Scourge of America

Posted .

If you’ve ever read about gum disease, you probably realize that its effects can be major: lost pearly whites, infected gums and injured bones. So that must mean that the disease is really not common, right? Most people still have their pearly whites, don’t they? Actually, the truth may surprise you. Keep reading to find out more.

Despite what you may think, periodontal disease is very common. Some estimates by the Center for Disease Control say that about half of U.S. adults agonize over a type of periodontal disease. Because multiple of us consume foods high in sugar (like soda and candy), we make higher levels of plaque and facilitate the onset of periodontal disease. There are two keys to making periodontal disease less prevalent. The first step is to stop chomping away on so many sugary-sweet foods so that we will have less plaque. The second step is to practice strong oral hygiene by brushing two times daily and flossing one time per day. Visiting the periodontists at least every half of a year also helps! Every appointment to our office includes an inspection for periodontal disease.
