Esthetic Crown Lengthening in Asheville & Brevard, NC
Periodontal plastic surgery is a form of cosmetic dentistry that Dr. Glenn J. Shefter and Dr. Greg S. Fertik, periodontists in the Asheville, NC region, routinely perform to improve the health and appearance of their patient’s gums and teeth.
Esthetic Crown Lengthening
Cosmetic periodontal surgery provides a solution for patients who are concerned about excess gum tissue around their teeth, which is a look that many refer to as a "gummy smile." Esthetic crown lengthening, also called a gum lift
, is a common procedure that we can perform in about an hour to remove the extra gum and bone tissue and expose more the natural tooth underneath. This type of periodontal surgery can be done on a single tooth or, more commonly, the entire smile. The end result is a much wider and more attractive smile.
Esthetic crown lengthening does more than improve the appearance of a smile, it also improves the health of the teeth and gums. Excess gum tissue around the teeth has the potential to trap more bacteria than usual, which can lead to gum disease. This type of periodontal surgery also decreases pocket depths by exposing more of the tooth’s surface area. Deeper periodontal pockets provide bacteria a greater opportunity to breed.
How it Works
Before having periodontal surgery, the gums are numbed with a local anesthetic to avoid discomfort during the procedure. Minor incisions are made in the gum line in order to separate the gum tissue from the teeth. A little bit of bone is also removed in order to achieve a natural looking smile. After the tissue is removed, the incisions are sterilized, stitched, and bandaged. Now the gums will begin to reattach and heal. Patients will visit us again in about a week or two for a follow up examination.
